Friends being into retro too
« on: February 28, 2015, 13:47:20 PM »
So over the entire time I've been collecting and playing retro games, my friends (as in close friends) haven't ever really shown any interest in "going back".

So last night was a games night and brung the good old N64, with a bucket of games for them to choose to play, majority of them have said retro is happening again next time.

So it appears I've converted them partially... But this got me thinking, has anyone else got friends that show no interest in it at all that are good friends with you? Do they have a view on what you do? If so what is it ? :p

My friends thought I was being stupid, until last night, rebuying old games I've already played and finished is the way it was put! Haha

Anyway, so, anyone?
Currently collecting:- PC Engine, mastersystem, mega drive and CDi.

I have friends who never talk about gaming but when I show them some of my old consoles they get all excited and want to play.  Now, many of those friends are close to my age so they did grow up when many of these consoles were first available.

Going to the final frontier, gaming...

Some of my mates are retro in terms of handheld. Lynx, GG and so on. None are collectors like me, in fact half my collection is from buying of them lol.

I have one friend who is also a Sega nerd (and my cousin), who I still play a lot of games with.  We were playing against each other in Street Fighter II 20 years ago, and just never stopped.  Outside of that, not really, that's mostly why I became interested in retro forums.

I still like the retro games, and have some friends who are into it also. I'm glad I grew up when I did so I could experience the full 80s console and arcade scene. When growing up, console games were a way to escape and have adventure, as often times your options are limited as a kid. Many of them also tend to take less time to play, and I like that. I'm less interested in modern "soap opera" games that require hours of time. Now that I'm an adult I find I'd rather spend my time "leveling up" in real life by learning new languages, focusing on health, developing new skills and traveling to new places, doing new things, and meeting new people - just like I had wanted to do when I was kid. So retro games filled that niche of time and interest for me and they continue to do so.

It would be nice to have more mates into this stuff, some of them and into all sorts of strange stuff... One in particular collects Lego.. yep Lego and he is as normal a man you will ever meet.

I have a friend who likes retro Nintendo games. But he has no interest in having a physical collection. He's perfectly happy with emulators and ROM downloads

I must admit that hardly any of my mates give a stuff if it isnt fifa 99 or any of the endless sequels.Yet when a few of us are having a few beers in mine they all suddenly want to play  x-men vs streetfighter or king of fighters 96 on the old saturn or streets of rage on the megadrive.Apart from then they couldnt care less.

I suspect we could convert more friends as I am sure especially in my case most of them were gaming crazy like I was back in the day.

When it comes to retro games my friends also show little interest and there uni students studying video game development with me but the minute they come over and see my N64 or my Atari 2600 or anything else, they wanna boot it up and play it for like 4-5 hours.

My friends think I spend too much money on RVG and I agree but god damn is it worth it :)

Strange you mentioned that Retro as my youngest brother is doing just that at uni and he has absolutley no interest in older games apart from collecting gameboys for some strange reason. He doenst even buy many games just gameboys, mind i suspect the money he spends on ps4 and xbox1 is enough to give his bank manager worries  :o

I think it's a shame that those at uni with me do not see how games have evolved over the years. Yes they remember playing them as kids but there is only so much you can remember. Playing them now you think what it would have taken to make that game compared to what it takes to make a game now. Atari 2600 games only use to take 3-6 months which was a long time back in the 80's but now a game takes 2-3 maybe even 4 years to make. I love looking back at retro games as there at techniques and gameplay mechanics which were used back then which aren't used now and in my spare time I try and implement them into my own stuff.

I couldnt agree more. Hell i remember typing in pages and pages of basic on my c64 only to find the bugger had errors in and that swiftly made my mind up about just playing games and leaving the hard work to people who could hack the frustration. It is a shame as you say some of the things programmers did back in the day with only 64k or less were amazing and im sure many programmers really cut their teeth on old archiac systems, while learning all manner of tricks. It kind of makes me wish i had the patience to stick at things back then when at college...instead of discovering women and booze :113:

See I'm not a programmer, I class myself as a game designer and level designer but I still know how to code in C++, C#, Java and Allegro. I like to think and create more visually rather then just sitting down and writing lines of code but I will do it if I need to. I get frustrated with code as much as the next person with god damn compiler errors  :14: but I still sit there and code when I need to otherwise I would just use a game engine like I normally do and try and create visually appealing games / levels. As for the discovery of women and booze at college, I never discover women, booze though not a problem.

Retro Back in the 80s/90s it was all code until 94/95 and i just could not take it in it was very different. That was when programming c was literally brand new.A lot changed back then with the emergence of 32 bit hardware.
