Sometimes it's best to use the recording built into the emulator such as MESS.  For general purpose there's always Bandicam but that has a watermark.  TwitchTV and now Googles WeVideo might have something.  They make you pay for higher resolution recording, though. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/deta ... mnnb?hl=en

For this type of work, free alternatives won't really offer the tools to make it smooth sailing, as video onscreen requires 2 processes to run together, one , your gameplay, two, the capture software doing both video and audio etc. and then encode the final result, trimming etc..I can't see it been handy, its all about work flow, you don't want a ton of post work on top of that.

The software I use if the emulator can't provide video / audio exporting, then I switch to Camtasia Studio Pro, not only capture your dermined resolution for capture, it also has an editing suite for trimming , transitions and unrestricted choice of export resolutions, so if you capture a small sized capture , you can enlarge etc. to fit your NLE for editing with other clips of different resolution . But Camtasia studio is not free software, but its used by all the professional trainers and capture whores out there..

There is excellent free software for this on Linux, called SimpleScreenRecorder - http://www.webupd8.org/2013/06/simplescreenrecorder-powerful-screen.html  I don't know if you'd want to go to the trouble, but most of the major emulators (Higan, Gens-GS, Kega Fusion, PCSX-R, PCSX2, Dolphin, Mupen64Plus, Hugo, MAME, MESS etc.) are available for Linux and run really well as long as you have an NVIDIA graphics card.

tbh I find FRAPS to be really good, I used it to capture some awesome video footage from Warframe on my pc and Witcher 2, it seems to do the trick if the spec of your pc is up to it. But let me know what you end up using if not that, be interested to hear
