Whats your favourite...... Flying Game?
« on: June 14, 2014, 12:35:40 PM »
*Flying being flying so anything from Choplifter to Boeing 747 Landing Trainer - no superheroes though!*

To take to the skies has long being a fantasy from the days of Icarus to when the Wright Brothers finally achieved their maiden trip, video games are no different and there have been many games using flight as the mechanic.

Here are some of my favourites:

From the Amstrad CPC464

Harrier Attack - love this, came out just after the Falklands which heavily featured Harriers and its only as an adult I've made the connection. According to the wiki the executable is under 9k!

Harrier Attack on the Amstrad CPC

From the Amiga/CD32

Jetstrike - The vid is from the CD32 version so features some snazzy topgun esq music and voice effects, now dont be fooled by the simplistic looking game. This is incredibly deep, has some very realistic flight routines (you can stall, take damage, even glide out of fuel/engines) and the choices of planes and weapons is almost obscene. It gets very hard in later levels as the terrain becomes very challenging - from memory some attack runs have to be started under the mountain through a tunnel!

From the PC

TFX - Lordy! This game blew most other flight sims out of the water for me. I never owned this myself (lacking a PC in early 90's) but would spend hours at a friends playing/watching. Also featured the 'Eurofighter' - eventually known as the Typhoon one of my favourite planes.

TFX - Tactical Fighter Experiment (DOS) (theme+gameplay)

Flight Unlimited 2 - Pretty much the only pure simulator I have played and enjoyed, its very easy to pick up, features a very realistic radio system and has some funky little missions to fly. Great game from the designers of the Thief series.

Cool idea for a thread.  I fixed your video links so the videos embed properly.  :)

You could just fix them without telling me lol I went back to our PMs o ge eaxmple code and the first vid was working but the 2nd and subsequent ones simply will not work in any post I do no matter what I try.... meh.

I forgot this one for the Amstrad CPC 464, unusual idea and incredibly hard in execution but have you ever fancied being part of the Red Arrows (Blue Angels would be the US equivelent). A flight sim but no shooting, just try to keep together for the routines but like I say - very hard.

Here is one that I've always enjoyed.  It is a flight simulator, F-18 Hornet for the Atari 7800.

[align=center:18a5xqy4]You can't really have this thread without posting Blue Lightning for the Lynx, this absolutely blew me away the first time I saw it. This launch game really showed just showed how superior the Lynx was to the competition at the time.

Atari Lynx - Blue Lightning [Epyx] 1989

And of course the game that inspired it, Sega's classic arcade game After Burner. This is the excellent Sega Saturn port:

Sega Saturn After Burner II (Secret option play data)

And finally the sequel to After Burner is of course G-LOC, famous for its rotating R360 cabinet in the arcades. The Game Gear version makes a lot of changes but still retains the same gameplay style and is one of my favourite games on the handheld:

Landing High by Taito - pilot a jet airplane from place to place. Sounds odd but I do remember enjoying it if not being any good at it!

F18A Interceptor - Amiga 500 Amazing sim for the time, spent hours on this game, great atmosphere!
Gunship 2000 - CD32, great helicoptor sim, again great atmosphere, loads of missions, good times!
A-10 Cuba - PC, my first sim for Pc, ran incredibly smoothly, had good fun on missions and landings.

Theres a few arcade games I like with planes but they're more shoot-em-ups:
Ghost Pilots - Neo Geo
Time Pilot - Arcade
19XX series - Arcade
I've got to mention After Burner too, even though its up there in all its glory. Never played the Saturn After Burner II and I believe the 32X version is quite terrific.

I'm trying to think of any other flying sim type games I've played. Maybe its a genre I've subconsciously avoided...?

[align=center:1e6mlspb]Talking of After Burner, I am also a big fan of this game, although it seems to get a lot of stick:
