Your top 10 retro RPG's
« on: September 07, 2013, 17:49:58 PM »
I bloody love a good RPG, and did even more so back in the day, here's 10 of my favourites. I don't really have a number 1, so these are in no particular order.

1: Y'S (SMS) This was the first RPG I ever played, and a brilliant way to be introduced to the genre.
2: Phantasy Star 1 (SMS) A truly massive and epic game, and bloody hard too! A classic.
3: Phantasy Star 3 (MD) Fantastic replay value, and a good alternative take on the series.
4: Phantasy Star 4 (MD) The peak of the series, fantastic.
5: Final Fantasy 4 (2 in the US, SNES) The best game in the FF series if you ask me. Ive played through it numerous times on numerous systems and never got bored with it. Oh, and the music is fantastic.
6: Buck Rogers, countdown to doomsday (MD) This was really immersive, it looked and sounded rather crap but that didn't matter a jot. Super game.
7: Shining Force 2 (MD) I loved the battle system here, and character progression was good fun too. Would love to see a modern day reboot, it would be a thing of beauty.
8: Suikoden (PS1) A unique and great game, getting all 108 characters was a very addictive task.
9: Final Fantasy 7 (PS1) So much to do, so well put together and the materia system was a great idea, used to spend loads of time on this (could never defeat emerald weapon though!)
10: D+D Warriors of the Eternal Sun (MD) Iirc this game wasn't rated particularly well back in the day, but this didn't stop me from sinking loads of hours into it. I loved it.

Over to you guys..

Ten is quite a lot to consider, but mine are below and in order.

1. Zelda: Links Awakening - GB
2. Zelda - Majora's Mask - 64
3. Adventure - Atari 2600
4. Final Fantasy 8 - PC
5. Little Big Adventure 2 - PC
6. Zelda - Link to the Past - SNES
7. Little Big Adventure - PC
8. Final Fantasy VII - PS1
9. Zelda 64 - 64
10. Final Fantasy IX - PS1
Its kind of sad that a good RPG feel likes a rarity, especially since voice acting became the norm.

I can never make my mind up about whether the PS2 counts as "retro". Tweaked my list to remove it since another game came to mind!

Did you have it in there? I didn't notice it lol. For what it's worth I reckon the PS2 just about qualifies as a retro machine now. Ah, no, you had FF10 didn't you. I wasnt so keen on that.

yeah, i actually really enjoyed FFX i think it hit all the buttons, well paced, good story line, nice twist, decent love interest/
tragedy, awesome summons. They even managed to make it feel relatively open world for a game with voice acting. I suppose i could have included Fable 1 in the list as well.

Cheating a bit, but I'm going start with Temple of Apshai Triliogy which included updated versions of The Temple of Apshai, Upper Reaches of Apshai and Curse of Ra.  I've been playing this a bit over the last couple of weeks having not played it since sometime in 2004 - I think.  Apparently the 3 titles had their graphics and gameplay improved before being released as a trilogy.  Even in '85 companies were re-imagining their wares!  Anyway, quality trio of RPG goodness.
Shining Force
Pool of Radiance - This always fascinated me on the 64.  I didn't ever get very far but I enjoyed the atmosphere, mystery and 'amazing' graphics.  Having tried to play it in recent years I've found it too slow to really get into.
Secret of Mana
Chrono Trigger (I've still not finished it  :-[)
Ultima IV (recently got an iOS release but I've yet to play that version)
Link to the Past
Link's Awakening
Galdegron's Domain
I'll go for Bard's Tale 2 to finish the 10.
