Looking Wonderful Marc, a dramatic difference from the original design you showcased, I did something similar for a book idea I created many moons ago with a defunct client that did not have the ambition nor the skill to execute the concept even market this to potential publisher at the time, some 4 years ago now, and when I saw this image I had to add here to show you what can be achieved with this type of effect, I also done a cover design for Fusion Books Story of the c64 in pixels which didn't make the grade based on the Steve Day C64 manual concept winning center stage lol, but I get the message across here in what can be done without drastically changing the formula.

I can tell you what is not working here with your covers..is the White Stroke against the black, this will only work if there is nothing behind the text or in some shape or form a pseudo 3D effect to lift it away from the cover , flat text is never truly merged with multiple things going on in the background.

Many thanks Marc for showing these. I really like the colour schemes but rather than flat colour have your image as normal, but with a colour overlay that all the different high lights and pixels make up the background etc. And I wish to personally thank you for purchasing the magazines from my site, I'm very grateful for the support, also just to mention in case youbmissed it I done a third Atari ST digital magazine in conjunction with my good friend Steve Gregory over at Atari Crpyt if case you might have missed Here in regards to colour schemes I was talking about and if you love your ST more your welcome to my Free Atari ST 2017 Calendar Here

Because of the damage and rep done to the magazine from the previous owner, you can and have to take into consideration of the customer that it could go the same route, and also what experience is here in regards to running an auction site or a fully fledged commercial magazine?  Hiring freelancers and them making sure they'll be paid, shipping logistics, printing logistics, proof readers and finishing touches, requires a team of about 8-10 people working on this for days and weeks. I read a few issues, found some of it great and a large majority of it pants, in saying that a certain person we all know has written for it after countless times saying he'd never write for a bias American retro gaming magazine lol..what a bullshitter..HaHa. But I'm thinking have gaming magazine reached their perk? With a majority of company profiles and previous games covered and even lost games and other things covered now, where can new information be recovered from that we haven't already read or seen? It's getting very hard these days to come up with fresh content you can't obtain from the net?

If I may add my two cents @Marc

I'm the resident designer here at RVG and have of course looked and seen your kickstarter project for the ambitious route you are taking with your book, I look the top trump concept for the book and seems to work very well, when designing something of this nature it's very important not to over kill or confuse the reader with so much going on which is very hard considering how visual these games are etc. Pick a format and stick with it which you have done here, my advice in regards to the actually spreads is rather than having a game screen watermarked against a whit background at what looks about 40% opacity why not use a colour from the games that is more in tune with the colour scheme of the game? In other words use colour from the game that will offset from the background but kept the the same feel to the game? So instead of white in which the game screen sits in the background, use a colour from the game instead as the watermark ?

Now for the cover I understand a few people here have concerns regarding it, i'm also one of those people, you have to remember that the cover in the center piece in a shop window, basic or bare many wil over look this regardless how good the content is inside, this make sense? So it's the trick to find out what's more appealing to the customer, as your covering not just one format but many within the same context, so a unified design would be needed here, now i'm not ruling out the difference machines you have here, but the context in the order they are in and these lines separating them, making it more appear like a puzzle book or noughts and Crosses approach, you may not have seen that, but your thinking it lol, I'm a sneak sorry. I also feel that your not taking the space of the cover into consideration either, with text and fonts being one size and not be centralised for impact to the reader, this needs to be addressed.

Now for my cheap plug, if you goto my site www.Atarigamer.co.uk I've done 3 atari related digital magazines to which ignited the communitis when they papered a few years back, so presentation was the key element here as was the content and the layouts, to which I'm sure you have done great work on. I can only tell you that when designing the cover or getting someone who can must know the subject matter very well. I love the Atari stuff and I think what your covering is fantastic and the stretch goals are ace too. I'd hate to see this hampered because the presentation didn't reach its desired audience, also to note that your page previews are flat, I can see that there was some sort of attempt to give the appearence of a two page spread mockup, I think these may need addressing also, like what I did for Marco Breddin's "Breaking the Boarders" Atari ST publication which you can see Here to get an unserstanding of what I'm talking about. But I truly wish you the best of luck with this wonderful project, I may possibly pick it up for review here at RVG as I also do book reviews for the site in helping authors like yourself get great awareness for their pubications

OMG, the very first game I ever played in my life in 1981 on the Atari VCS, this is a remake of the classic Activision hit "Laser Blast" that is insane that it has not arrived on the intellivision now. Very good :)

At least it would be more enticing to me., but I know the designers today are wet behind the ear college heads with no real heritage of our the true masters did it back then. I think you have a valid point there fella, but it begs the question, what would all of us want to see here?, a official machine carrying a cross all the Atari platforms with the posiblity of an App Store to which you could purchase these games yet again, with a posiblle addition of classic Atari coin-op games, like Marble Madness , pit fighter, paper boy that type of thing?

Also I'm tire of seeing the Atari 2600 taking preference on these concepts, what about the 7800, 5200 , jaguar, Lynx and A8 systems getting a look in now? Thinking outside the box..especially the AtariBox has to be more than just another updated Atari flashback number, I've being thinking here what possibilities could they captivate here?

Great video fella. Loved  super Pac-Man when I first seen on my Atari 8bit to which I thought for many years was a computer game exclusive,  never knew it was an Arcade up till about 15 years ago, but it was quite unusal take on the Pacman take, but didn't think the idea of keys worked well. I also remember seeing the arcade cab on an episode of Starcade too. So a very nice looking cab

I think the retro magazine element now leaves a wide open opportunity for a lot of creative talent access to getting their work published, as it is a quality produced product and needs to go more international than just the USA , I can't comment on the latest issues of the magazine, but it seemed to going in the right direction until that was tarished because of Mike's involvement because of the Coleco thingy..

Yeah, you are conveying the making of a reviewer here without drawing yourself into the front line. So it's definitely the beginning of a great review fella. All you need do in elaborate in more detail to which games the author is talking about, do you agree with this opinion etc.

I personally tend to take both the positives and negatives and give them both opportunity within the review even if I love the book..but this is something I have to get.
