Title: The Atari VCS Encyclopedia Volume One (Out Now)
Post by: Greyfox on March 31, 2015, 14:14:00 PM
I'm delighted to announce that I have been commissioned to produce massive 400+ page book based on the Atari VCS games library which comes and I mean completely packed with VCS artifacts and cover over 105 games in its first volume, this is be the definitive guide go to for your Atari VCS fix. Includes lots of information about the games, the rarity of them etc. plus lots more. Thanks to RVG!!!!

Everything has been remastered to the highest standard, including box art, cartridge images, manuals, so they will look superb in the book and better than anything on the internet. The book is been written by author Derek Slaton whom also wrote the Encyclopedia for the Sega Master system and is also a member here on RVG :)

May thanks AmigaJay and Shadowrunner  :113: , its been an incredible journey so far for me as well as I didn't know a lot of the games in here myself and has been a real eye opener if I'm been honest, taken the time in producing something visual like this doesn't come without its hiccups, the amount of restoration I've had to do during production has been crazy, but had to have it right, I want this book to be exceptional for its author when it goes to the printers, I was hired and hopefully have done this exceptional machine justice for both client and purchaser.

Now if I could only finish what seems like an eternity, the closer I get to finishing stuff on it the further it moves away? Anybody else experience this? My Video Game Artistry compendium book, but all I can say it, is wait till you see this..lol..

I also think that this book with be classed as the go to book for VCS info, sure you won't even need to plug a game to play it, the book with give you that fix, look at it as a mobile Atari VCS in book form lol.

Hey everyone, I'm Derek Slaton and I'm the author of the Atari VCS Encyclopedia.  Greyfox, you have done an amazing job with the design and have really energized me through this entire process.  Hope you aren't too burned out from this as there are still three more volumes to go until the project is complete!

I did want to mention that in addition to the print version there will also be digital versions.  A PDF edition, a Kindle version, and an Apple iBooks edition.  The iBooks edition is going to stand out from the rest as it is going to include gameplay footage to go along with every game.

I'm really looking forward to having this released and to hearing what everyone thinks about the project!

Thanks for all the support so far and to answer some questions regarding the VCS Encyclopedia Volume one

this Book will be based on a volume set, the first volume of four will cover 105 games starting with the letter "A" to "D" and continue thereafter, so in total there should be over 400-500 Atari VCS titles covered when it arrives at the end of it's series and will be in negotiations with Derek to hopefully produce the next three volumes with him.

Regarding Pricing of the book, the Author Derek Slaton ( [member=5506]VgaTV[/member] ) has posted over on Atari Age what to expect and have quoted him here for you all

"I won't have specific pricing until I get everything squared away with the publisher, but it's going to be in the same ballpark as my Sega Master System Encyclopedia which retails for $50 on Amazon but usually hovers around $45 (hardback, full color, 435 pages).  Could end up being a little less, just depends on final page count and how much the publisher charges me (the 2600 Encyclopedia is going to be over 400 pages) The digital versions are going to be cheaper, right now I'm looking around the $10-$15 price point for the various digital versions (going to depend on version).  While I would like to make money on this (which would afford me the opportunity to do a lot more books like this) I also want to make sure it is accessible to as many people as possible.  Also, for those not in the USA, the publisher I'm using has printers in the USA, UK, and Australia, so you can purchase and it ships locally.  No outrageous international shipping charges!

Also regards to an Atari VCS Homebrew Series may be covered as this would be down to Derek to decide, I'm only designing it for him, but due to the amount of material that will be presence in the VCS Volumes and the way it's been designed could potentially hinder the Homebrew side of the VCS because there may not be enough material to present in book form and I would guess that a fair amount of them would lack box art, manuals and misc content, so it will need to be discussed in detail what route to take regarding it.

so far hours and hours of research, formatting and remastering has taken place during the design process of the book, so everything is on schedule from my side of the pond to have it finished very soon and hopefully in the hands of Atari VCS fans.

I will update with more as it arrives.

cheers guys :)

Just wanted to give a little up date and status on the book, so I've now arrived at 380+ page mark which means I'm hoping to have it Finished for Derek this weekend!!!, with the massive amount of content I received from Derek was simply overwhelming and pushed me outside the normal barriers I would go for on such a project, but I think what Derek has done here is nothing short of a miracle here regarding the information and content I'm sure can't wait to get into the hands of the Atari 2600 fans new and old.

So with that Derek has decided to not to complicate things or confuse people regarding the title of the book, as it's mainly known as the Atari 2600 rather than the Atari VCS like here in europe and he has changed the title of the book to "The Atari 2600 Encyclopedia : Volume One", so here is a small poster preview of what it will finally look like enjoy! :)

[member=1]zapiy[/member]  the publisher I use has a printer in the UK, so it will be available via the UK Amazon.  For comparison, here is the link to my Master System Book on there.  I don't know how shipping works from the UK to the rest of Europe, but is it relatively cheap?

As for the cost of the book, i don't have a firm price on it yet (won't have that until I upload the files and find out the printing costs) but it should be comparable to the SMS book.  The timeline is getting close as the Print PDF is being compiled.  The digital versions will also be available in Europe, with the Kindle and straight PDF version and the iBooks version (with gameplay footage).

:113: but with this being an American publication it is better known as the "2600" over there, I personally felt it should of had VCS in the title somewhere, but alias Derek's the boss on that and decided to have it as the "2600 Encyclopedia".

Now that the book is now complete (yeahhheee) it is being proof checked for any final errors etc and with that passed it's straight of to the printers for production, which I believe can be purchased in both Europe and America, so no crazy p&p involved, I'm actually very eager to get this myself to hold high above my head and say "I made this" lol.

More news I'm sure when and where it's available from VgaTV (Derek Slaton) himself.

Hey Everyone, just a quick update.  The proof copy of the print version is being printed and shipped my way.  Assuming there aren't any complications it should be available in the next couple of weeks.  The digital versions are on track as well.  We are getting closer!

It's been a enlightening experience to say the least, from approach to delivery in less than 8 weeks has to some sort of record? Now that the book is more or less completed and on its way, as an Atari 2600 fan, I can imagine that people will reach for this at events and helping them decide purchases at auctions and the likes and when not doing that will simple marval at how great this console is and information contained within. And for that along I feel I've truly done my job on the book. Minus the back and forward to the printers etc..lol.

Hello FrOst and welcome to the RVG forums, and great to fellow Irish man signing up,  I am the graphic designer behind the book and it is estimated that it can be ordered from Amazon in the next 2-3 weeks via Amazon UK, Our American cousins have all the luck with it been based there, so as soon as I have word or [member=5506]VgaTV[/member] posts about the it's European release, I'll post it here for you all.

But in the mean time why not check the world first book review (http://http) by our Review guy in charge TrekMD and let us know what you thought?. Also why not give yourself an introduction in the introduction page on the forum.

Kind Regards

Darren.

Thanks Darren! It's good to know I'm not the only Atari enthusiast on this small island. I will indeed throw up an introduction soon, just down the pub at the moment!
I have a fairly decent collection of 2600 games, and have been collecting for years. My first console was the 2600, so it's always stayed with me. This collection of books just sounds like a must have!
Thanks again, Eamonn.

I have done a small update on the review.  I read someone complaining that the iBooks version doesn't look like the print version and read a post from TheVgaTV explaining that there are indeed differences, so I made a comment about that on the review.  I can't look at the iBook myself (I don't have iDevices) but wanted to also include that in the review.

How the sales on this [member=5506]VgaTV[/member]

Pretty slow actually.  At the moment I'm averaging 2-3 copies sold a month.  Overall I sold enough to break even at least, which isn't too bad.  I'm still working on the next volumes, although my day job has completely consumed me which is why it is taking so long.  I'm hoping things slow down here in another month or two (to give you an example of the craziness, I have driven 6,000 miles in the last 6 weeks).  I'm looking forward to spending some time in front of the computer!

Yeah I'm a commercial architecture photographer, which means I have to go to the buildings.  Teleportation technology can't get here soon enough, haha.

Yeah I'm hoping that I get a boost in sales with the next volume.  But really I just want to have them on my bookcase more than anything!

not even sure how to go about finding a publishing deal. Not too worried about it though, as long as I'm at least breaking even I'm cool with it. At this point I'm doing it simply because I want it to exist and to be on my bookshelf. Hopefully there will be some other people out there who enjoy it.
