Title: What's Your Favourite 2D Fighting Series?
Post by: TL on March 27, 2012, 17:56:22 PM
So which one of these is your favourite.

I have to go for the King Of The Fighters games, for me they combine all the best parts of the other great SNK fighters.

I would say a tight fight between SF and KoF.. Went with KoF for the pure arcade fun.

Streetfighter for me, iconic characters and moves and it paved the way for all the others.

For me KOTF is like a "best of" for all the other games.

Guilty Gear.  No contest on that one for me.

Most fighting games, I find a little slow-moving (which includes SF, KoF, and definitely all 3D fighters).... well, granted, I find LOTS of things slow-moving.  This one is faster than most and allows for very aggressive play and has a superb comboing system.

Not to mention the characters.  I looooooooove the cast of characters in GG.

I've played it a bit too much.  It's one of the very few games where I WILL actually brag about my skill level, as I feel I've earned the right to do so.  Same with Blazblue....

After that, I'd say Blazblue, which is of course very similar.   Like it for pretty much the same reasons.

I'm not sure what series to list in third place, really.   I've played most of them at some time or other.

The only fighting games I really spent much time playing were Mortal Kombat 2 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.

Street fighter or me I think. I know it is a fairly obvious choice but it was the only one of all the fighting games that i ever completed.

I used to like Art of Fighting, Samurai Showdown and King of the Fighters but could never get past the first couple of characters as the local arcade that had those machines in had all the difficulties ramped up for more profits (found this out through my friend that used to work there). Shame really as it kind of ruined those games for me.

Hm, interesting.

Most fighter fans recognize them instantly.  GG in particular, is generally considered to be the most difficult-to-learn fighting game series ever made.  Some of the characters are also very, very well known, in a similar way to how many Touhou characters are well known.   GG has been a popular series for quite some time now.   New games in the series havent shown up for awhile now due to EXTREMELY stupid licensing issues, but that recently went away, so the most recent one is getting re-ported, onto XBLA and PSN (I dont know when).     It's a very fast-paced fighting game that focuses heavily on very complicated combos and mixups, and makes a point of using both ground and air tactics in equal measure, due to airdashing and blocking and such.

BB plays very similar..... VERY similar, but with some changes to make it more accessible, which is to say, it's actually accessible, where GG..... ahh, I love GG, but it's REALLY freaking difficult for most new players to get a handle on it.   BB is easier.   The characters have the same style to it as well;  Arc's fighting games tend to be quite similar to each other.  BB can be found on 360 or PS3 currently.

I'm going to add Karate Champ and Yie ar Kung Fu to my list of favorite fighters just because i didn't think of them previously. Stupid of me to overlook them but they are serious retro contenders.

I like them all, but I picked other. My favorite 2D fighters are the 'Capcom vs.' games.

I like the game engine, the excessive combos, and the screen flashing chaos. Doesn't matter if it's superheroes or Tatsunoko. They're all great games.

The only ones I have played are the Saturn ones, I do like how outragous they are.

Always followed the SF series from the SNES version to the SF IV 3D for the 3ds. I must say that I'm quite a fan of the "capcom vs." series too. I really enjoy KOF and Samurai Showdown aswell. Probably the best game I played and I own of the vs series is "Capcom vs. SNK 2eo" for the gamecube.... brilliant gameplay, a LOT of characters to choose from and really excellent soundtracks.

...Uh, Virtua Fighter isn't 2D. OK, well, SOME of them are, but that's not what I meant.

To get more on topic, I'd have to say that my favorite 2D fighter franchies are either the Marvel VS series, at least, before MVC3, which... was really not worth it, and the Darkstalkers series. Lots of interesting, freaky character concepts, some really fast gameplay, and fantastic animation. Sadly, since Capcom sucks REALLY hard these days, we're not likely to get another one.

It used to be that I would have put Mortal Kombat up here, but honestly, the 2D games haven't really aged all that well. To be honest, the newest one plays so much better than all the other 2D games that anything before it is better for the nostalgia value. There's just so much more depth in the new Mortal Kombat that it feels more like a Capcom game with a lot more blood.

I went for Street fighter series, but this to me doesn't include Street fighter EX series or Street Fighter 4 etc.. as they are no 2D,  I think Street Fighter rules the roost purely on the facts that it's controls where absolutely spot on, the character design was brilliant and varied balanced game-play makes Street Fighter the rest of them learn from..

now I'm off to the Dojo for a baiting :)

I voted for SF2.  I have to say I'm not a fan of the series before or after '2', but all the '2s' were epic!

Out of the games on the list it's the one that impressed me most - I haven't played all of them.  I loved 2d fighting games on the c64, WOTEF, IK, IK+ etc, and also being a Zzp64! and then Mean Machines/ONM/CVG reader, SF2 was the next logical step.  It was lauded by Mean Machines Magazine et al back when it was released, ONM even released a VHS video with SNES SF2 content if I remember correctly.  Amazingly SF2 exceeded all the hype surrounding it.  A gilded game during a golden era.

I don't think I've enjoyed any fighting game quite so much ever since SF2.  I still play the old 2d games whereas modern ones seem to me to be utterly bromidic.  I know, I know.. I've lost the love.

originally years ago I would've said Street Fighter straight away but I actually voted KOF as I love the KOF characters and more realistic combat, I do love Street Fighter and Alpha especially but find the KOF characters, moves, graphics etc just beats SF for me

I never really good get into King of Fighters as much as Street Fighter. It's not that I think it's a bad series, and I really enjoyed '98 for the sheer number of characters and '03 for the more Marvel-esque tag system. But for me, I never really could gel with how they'd tend to change around the moves every sequel, so you couldn't really get good with anybody unless you picked one game and stuck with it.

Garou, though... :)

Way of the Exploding Fist or IK+ for me.

No reliance on learning stupid combos.

I agree with you, to a certain extent.

It's not the combos I have a problem with, it's when a game introduces a lot of subsystems is when I have a problem understanding it. This mostly applies to the Guilty Gear and BlazBlue games, for me. Can somebody explain what exactly a False Roman Cancel is supposed to be, again?

Technically speaking Garou is part of the Fatal Fury series
