Title: Games Based On Cartoons!
Post by: TL on May 29, 2013, 18:56:50 PM
So what are your favourite games based on the cartoons we used to watch as kids (and probably still do!)

My first pick and one that many people probably don't realise is based on a cartoon is Pac-Land, I loved the TV series so when I first saw the coin-op when I was on holiday at Butlins in Margate I was ecstatic!

I don't think I was a kid when I used to watch this but I still loved the TV show Gargoyles and the game based on the show that was released for the Sega MD / Genesis.

Thundercats - Atari ST

It's not a great game, it's just a Rastan and Rygar clone, but it was one of the games I got with my ST so I have good memories of playing it:

It does have some brilliant title music by Rob Hubbard though:

Have Wacky Races on DC, looks superb, handling is fine, just found it utterly tedious to play, seems to lack that spark, if that makes sense? just found it kinda cold.

Thunder! Thunder! Hey that Thundercats has some good tunes.

Your welcome, Shadowrunner. I was going to include Battletoads and Busby. Sadly, both games only had one cartoon special. Cadillac and Dinosaurs was another that I played a few times on the Sega CD.

I understand Rogue Trooper. I know the 3DO games are Japanese releases and playing the Nintendo DS version requires blowing into the system. When I first played Wacky Races DS, strange looks were all to common. :)

Funny you mention Count Duckula as the second game based on the cartoon is regarded as one of the worst games ever made!

From Wikipedia:

Quote
Critically, the game consistently achieved some of the lowest review scores of the 8-bit era and is considered one of the worst games published for these platforms. Sinclair User reviewed the game, awarding it 64%, concluding: "If you like silent, slow, basic, dated, unresponsive, annoying games, get it!". The Your Sinclair review was more scathing, awarding 9%: "The whole thing seems to play quite happily by itself, with the player being a sort of novelty bonus."

The Amstrad CPC version fared no better, with Amstrad Action awarding the game a mere 3%.
In the final issue of Your Sinclair, Count Duckula 2 was voted the Number One Worst Speccy Game Of All Time by the magazine's readers.

It is such a horrible game! At the time Alternative were having a little war with another budget label called Hi-Tec with games based on cartoons. Alternative also had games like Trapdoor, Postman Pat, Sooty & Sweep and Thomas The Tank Engine. While Hi-Tec had the Hanna Barbara licence and made some really good games based around characters like Yogi Bear, Hong Kong Phooey, Quick Draw McGraw and Huckleberry Hound.

Isn't Asterix on the 2600 a modified version of Taz?

Yes, it was Asterix in Europe

So they still remained cartoon-based, just different cartoons.  :)  Just so everyone knows what we are talking about, here is Taz on the 2600.

Never saw the show, but if you really liked Rock N' Roll Racing, you could look into Biker Mice From Mars. Fun fact about this game: The European version, for whatever reason, is LITTERED with Snickers advertisements.

Biker Mice From Mars (SNES) - MAIN RACE (Hard) - Throttle - Part 1 (http://http)

Blazing Dragons was a cartoon that pretty much everybody's forgotten these days. You think it'd do better, given that it was created by Terry Jones of Monty Python fame. It did, however, get a really good point and click adventure game made out of it for the PS1 and Saturn.

Blazing Dragons pt 1 (http://http)

If you're into Gunstar Heroes and Contra, you might try out Adventures of Batman & Robin on the Genesis. The developers made the rather, ah, unique decision of making this game into a co-operative run-and-gun. Or, this being Batman, it'd be more accurate to say run and throw. It's a very, very pretty game, but it's also ball-crushingly difficult. You have been warned.

You thought that was all I had? Hell naw.

Snes - Tiny Toons Adventures Hard mode Walkthrough complete (http://http)

This is Tiny Toons - Buster Busts Loose. It's not actually the first Tiny Toons game, and it was far from the last, but it's the best of them all. The Genesis version is actually an entirely different game, although it's not really as fun or unique.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Manhattan Missions -- Extortion Mission 2 (http://http)

Here's an interesting one: A Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game that's both entirely new, and, oddly enough, DOS exclusive. OK, this one's based more on the comics, with some elements of the cartoon, but... bah, close enough. Unlike the other games, which were beat-em-ups or platformers, this is actually more of an action adventure with strategy elements. For one thing, you're under a time limit, and the Turtle's enemies will gradually take over parts of the city if they aren't cleaned out in time. Each turtle also increases in speed, strength, and endurance the more you use them, along with learning new moves. There's a really good write-up here (http://http).

Wild West C.O.W. Boys of Moo Mesa (Arcade) (http://http)

So if you liked Sunset Riders, here's a game not too far off. I've never seen the show this was based on, so this must have been when Konami was really scrounging for licenses. Still, I've played it, and if you're into run-and-guns like Contra, it's definately worth playing. The addition of a health bar is nice, too.

And the new version which never got very far into development.

While we're on the subject of Disney...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yra8K3oXBk (http://http)

I always liked the SNES version of Aladdin. I played it before the Genesis/Mega Drive version, and to be honest, I always preferred the SNES version. The Sega version is pretty, sure. No denying that. But the SNES version controls better, the 'hit boxes' aren't so wonky, for lack of a better term, the difficulty's balanced better, and I'd say the music sounds better.

The only version of Aladdin I have ever played has been the PC version, which was a DOS program.  I actually still have it.  I need to create a virtual Windows 98 PC to play it along with a whole bunch of other PC games that I have.

Wait, Laird, I'm pretty sure I put the PR games in the super hero games thread. Did somebody move them?

I'm pretty sure the DOS version of Aladdin is just the Genesis version, which is... well, I've gone into my issues with it. Trust me, if you want to hear more, I'd be glad to explain.

Or, you could try The Lion King, which also has a DOS port. I never really got far into it, because it's actually a lot harder than it looks.

The Lion King (PC/DOS game) Pt. 1 (http://http)

By the way, it's awesome you're making a virtual machine, and I'd like to hear how that goes. Keep in mind that DOSBox is always an option, though, if you ever want to try anything out.
Title: Re: Games Based On Cartoons!
Post by: TrekMD on July 18, 2013, 22:25:15 PM
Yes, I was thinking about DOSBox as well as an option but the issue is that I also have some older games that need to run in an older version of Windows.  Making a virtual Windows98 PC should do the trick for both my needs.  If, for some reason, that doesn't work for the DOS games, then DOSBox it is!  :)

Your Power Rangers games are in the superhero thread.  I added one more that I have as a PC game.

About Lion King...I did get to try a demo of it a while back but never got the full game.

Flintstones on the Amstrad CPC is one of the worst games Ive played, firstly there is this:

Really? Painting a wall as a video game? Annoyingly Pebbles will frequently escape and you need to to catch her.

Then.....

Possibly the worst Bowling game ever, extremely slow and meaningless controls.....

I think this appeared on other systems too, this is the ST version:
