Title: Video Game Music On Real Instruments
Post by: TL on February 11, 2012, 23:07:05 PM
I am a MASSIVE fan of chip tunes on the retro systems, so what is cooler than when real musicians do their own renditions? (also see the SST thread)

First up here are some brilliant tunes from the original Streets Of Rage game:

Streets of Rage, Keep the Groovin', Round 4 (Band Cover) (http://http)

Streets of Rage, Dilapidated Town, Round 2 (Band Cover) (http://http)

STREETS OF RAGE music on the beach piano Ripley9 (http://http)

Streets Of Rage music Intro piano (http://http)

The last soul (streets of rage) on piano + impro (http://http)

OK, here is a rather unique instrument used to play the theme for Super Mario Bros.  The music is performed using an ancient Chinese instrument called the sheng (http://http).  This instrument was created thousands of years ago, making this even more fascinating.  The performer even uses the sheng to recreate coin sounds!  Have a listen...

Why the hell do people always play the Mortal Kombat theme from the film instead of any of the game music.

I did this several years ago, based on one of the MK1 tunes:

Those are some exceptional remakes, thier should be an album made from these, simply divine in every way and would rather have this playing in my car that the manufactured bullshit they call music of today..

so with that..I thought I'd add another classic to the collection :)

www.youtube.com/watch?v=JG7Jt4y6G_Q (http://http)[/align:144dbqqn]

and another amazing piece or Re-composition of "The Last Ninja"
www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4j6dSrLjRY (http://http)[/align:144dbqqn]

and lastly a very different take, this time re-done on a rival 16-bit platform, Golden Axe's "Death Adder's theme" done on a Snes sound chip, actually quite good too.

I'd been meaning to post this, but kept forgetting.  I recommended the Zillion games, which were based on the anime, in the SMS thread.  Well, I think they had the best soundtrack of any SMS game, and in fact the songs were adapted from the anime.  Here are a couple of examples of those songs on real instruments:

Yeah it would. I can't imagine how much time/practice it takes to learn and play music but it sure would be nice to have it end up in a game to make it even more worthwhile. (For the musicians, I would think)
